The Carry

The same object, drawn again after ten years of carrying the first one. Four card bays, a cash slot, no closure. Thin enough to forget, strong enough to outlast the trousers it lives in.

Shoulder from a tannery that still pit-tans, cut where the fibre is tightest. Brass rather than plate, so wear reveals more brass. Waxed linen thread, because a stitch should be repairable.

Every panel is cut by hand against a drawn template. Edges are bevelled, sanded, sealed, then burnished until the fibre closes. Stitch holes are pricked with an iron and sewn saddle-stitch, two needles, twice through every hole — so a broken thread stays local.

Carry 00 taught the studio what to keep. The proportion was right; the edge was not. Carry 01 is the correction — thinner, more even, and made in runs small enough to hold every piece before it leaves.

The first run is not yet finished. Leave an address and we will write once when it is ready — nothing else.

Keep it dry and carry it daily. Dust with a soft cloth; a neutral cream once a year is enough. Marks are not damage. Repairs are made at the studio for the life of the object.
